If you’re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who’s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she’s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah...then you’re gonna’ hate my story.

Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It’s not the “I can do anything, now that I’ve found you/I’m misunderstood but one day you’ll find me irresistible because of it” tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I’m a complete witch. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I’m every girlfriend’s worst nightmare and every boy’s fantasy.

I’m Sophie Price and this is the story about how I went from the world’s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Sometimes you read a book that inspires you. Sometimes you read a book that empowers you. And sometimes, you read a book that completes you. This book, this fantastic, amazing, breath-taking, straight up stunning book, gives you everything and more. So much more.  It gives you an inside view to a life that at first, seems hopeless and shallow. But then, Fisher Amelie gives us the greatest things: hope, change, and unyielding love.

Sophie Price is vain, and she knows it. She is the girl that every girlfriend fears. After being caught with cocaine for a second offense she is sent to Uganda for six months to a small orphanage called Masego. There, Sophie is faced with the cold hard facts of life in one of the poorest nations in the world. She faces a reality different from her own and real dangers, ones that many are unaware of or ignorant to. Sophie has a choice: to continue living her life as the queen of the puppets or become something more. Watching Sophie grow and change and morph made me come to deeply respect her. She’s unlike any other character, and she is astonishing (in a good way).

There are so many fantastic characters in this book. Ian Aberdeen is probably the love of my life. Just kidding, maybe. I loved his strength, maturity, and downright sexiness. His ability to see through things and to protect is so moving that I was crying at parts. Charles, Karina and Pemmy along with Spencer (who I admit I wouldn’t mind seeing get his own story) blew me away as well. They are the foundation of so many important things that are bigger than them. The unconditional love is touching, and Fisher made it incredibly real.

I love every second, every word, every moment of this book. I lived and breathed the characters, and cherished them-even Sophie who I grew to love possibly most of all. Fisher Amelie blew me away, and I was severely impressed by her. She wrote a book about a real life issue. Joseph Kony really does exist, there really is a child army called the Lord’s Resistance Army, and children really are pulled out of their homes at night and their families slaughtered. It’s all real. Fisher stuck with the facts, and I really have to commend her for writing the book about something that has affected the lives of over 66,000 children.

Vain is a book you absolutely need to pick up, and not put down. It’s a beautiful and enchanting ride an adventure that will leave you wanting for more. Fisher Amelie blew me away and captured my heart and soul. Do not pass this book up; instead learn from Fisher and her characters just as I did.

“You may have misery,” she continued, ignoring my plea, “you may lose hope in the sorrow of an unplanned life but as long as you have faith and trust in adoration, in affection, in love, that sorrow will turn to happiness. And that is a constant, dear.”

Author Bio:
Fisher Amelie resides in the South with her kick ace husband slash soul mate. She earned her first 'mama' patch in 2009. She also lives with her Weim, 'Jonah', and her Beta, 'Whale'. All these living creatures keep the belly of her life full, sometimes to the point of gluttony, but she doesn't mind all that much because life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining, right?

Fisher grew up writing. She secretly hid notebooks and notebooks of dribble in a large Tupperware storage container in her closet as a kid. She didn't put two and two together until after college where it suddenly dawned on her, "Hey, I like writing". She's a bit dense. "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are. Put down that Oreo, your butt can't take any more." "You're rude." "Yeah, yeah." Anyway, she likes to write and has finally beaten her self-esteem into submission enough to allow herself to be scrutinized under the 'other readers' microscope. "No! No! Not a cover slip! Last time it gave me a ra...." (mumbling)
