Make it Last by Bethany Lopez

TITLE: Make it Last
AUTHOR: Bethany Lopez
RATING: 3 Stars
PAGES: eBook
PUBLISHER: Self Published
SERIES: Friends & Lovers, #1
SOURCE: Personal Library

This is a New Adult title - Meant for readers 18 and older.

In a small town, it's hard to recover from being dumped by your high school sweetheart. That's just what Briana has to do after Colin leaves her to follow his dreams. She focuses her energy into her friendships and the pursuit of her own goal of becoming a chef. Just when she finally feels like she's on the right path, he comes back to town.

Colin knew breaking up with Briana before leaving for college was the right thing to do. He was determined to leave small-town life behind forever, and that included his high school girlfriend. But when a sports injury puts him on the sidelines, he's forced to return home. Seeing Briana again brings back a lot of memories, and Colin wonders if he made the right decision. It doesn't take long for him to realize he wants her back, and this time, he wants to make it last.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Make it Last is a short and sweet story that seems to circle around something that most of us find hard: forgiveness. Briana “Bree” is a young woman on the verge of making her dream come true by getting in to a culinary school. Just as she’s working towards her goal enters Colin, her old high-school sweetheart who broke her heart when he dumped her before leaving for college.

I actually really liked this story. It was short, a quick read for a rainy day. And I certainly liked the characters though sometimes I felt like details were left out. Bree is pretty easy to relate to, as is her roommate and best friend Kara. Colin seems nice enough, and the fact that he’s grown up from his high school days is obvious! There are many characters to keep up with, many different story lines that are branching out from this first book in the series.

We can expect a lot more from Bethany Lopez I think! She’s a fantastic writer whose only bound to get better. At points the grammar needed work and I felt like situations were cleared up faster than possible. In the end though, I found that I wouldn’t mind reading the second book in the series, I Choose You. I’ll definitely be waiting to see what else Lopez gives us as she progresses with her writing!

I have been waiting for this book since the moment I finished Lola and the Boy Next Door! Stephanie Perkins is a fantastic author who has had me since Anna and the French Kiss!

9. Just One Day by Gayle Forman

A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay

When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

Just One Day is the first in a sweepingly romantic duet of novels. Willem’s story—Just One Year—is coming soon!

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)
Gayle Forman has written some of the most empowering and devestatingly beautiful novels I've ever read. So of course, it only makes sense that I will forever read anything by her! Plus, the romantic idea of traveling to different places and a Dutchman are enough to sell me!

8. The Forever of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen

Ella continues going to school and tries to deal with her irrevocable mistakes. All she wants is Micha by her side, but she refuses to let her problems get in the way of his dreams.

Micha spends his days traveling the country with the band, but he knows something is missing from his life. Being away from Ella is harder than he thought. He wants her closer to him—needs her with him. But he won’t ask her to leave college, just to be with him.

The few moments they do spend together are fleeting, intense, and filled with passion, but it only makes it more difficult when they have to part. They quickly learn that a long-distance relationship is challenging and it tests their love.

They know they want to be together, but is wanting something enough to get them to their forever?

(New Adult Contemporary)
*Mature Content** Recommended for ages 17+ due to sexual situations and language

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)
Ella and Micha ripped my heart out, then put it back together. In the second installment to their story I'm sure it will be just the same. I need to see this couple, one of my favorites, finally get their HEA!

7. Crush by Nicole Williams

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Nicole Williams is an amazing writer, and I LOVED/LIVED FOR Lucy and Jude. Still do! I'm pretty sure I'll be bawling my eyes out saying good-bye to them once this book ends, but I'm positive Williams will make it worth the while!

So currently there isn't much information out on Between the Lines #4. But, the other books absolutely rocked. I'm a major Graham and Emma fan, and, thanks to Good For You (BTW#3) I'm a Reid and Dori fan! I can't wait to see who we get re-introduced to in this one!

5. Deeper We Fall by Chelsea M. Cameron

Her plans come to a screeching halt when not one, but both brothers responsible for the accident end up back in her life again.

Zack is cruel, selfish and constantly rubbing what happened to her friend in Lottie's face.

Zan is different. He listens to her awkward ramblings. He loves "To Kill a Mockingbird" as much as she does, and his dark eyes are irresistible. His words are few and far between, but when he does speak, she can't help but listen.

The trouble is, Zan was the driver in the accident, and now Lottie's discovered he lied to her about what happened that night. Now she must decide if trusting him again will lead to real forgiveness, or deeper heartache.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

I love Chelsea M. Cameron, her writing that is ;). She blew me away on My Favorite Mistake, and I have no doubt that she will do the same! I'm not one for triangles and loving brothers, but I feel like that won't be much of a problem in Deeper We Fall ;).

4. The Redemption of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Jessica Sorensen proved to me, in one aching shot, that she can indeed, leave us with a heart-wrenching cliff hanger. This is the book following the Coincidence of Callie and Kayden, and it's bound to have us hanging onto our seats I'm sure!

Now she finds that Cash is not only a danger to her heart, but his family has associations that are a danger to her life as well. She soon discovers that there are some situations in life where trust is a girl’s only option. And this is one of them. If she’s to live, she must trust Cash with her life. AHHH. I knew the world wasn't going to end because Origin won't be released until July 2013. And, the world just isn't that cruel! I may be a bit dramatic (or dead serious) but Jennifer L. Armentrout is a fantastic, EPIC author and the Lux series is my absolute favorite! And talk about cliff-hangers and crying. I was like a baby. And I totally carried around Opal for DAYS after finishing it, re-reading the ending (even making my boyfriend :o) because I couldn't believe it. This one will be pre-ordered the moment we can!

These are the book I'm dying for. I get excited even thinking about it! Some are due out in the start of the year while others have later expectancy. Just looking at this gets me more psyched for 2013!

Up In Flames - by Nicole Williams

TITLE: Up In Flames
AUTHOR: Nicole Williams
RATING: 5 Flaming Stars
PAGES: eBook
PUBLISHER: Self-Published
SERIES: --
SOURCE: Personal Library

One small town girl with a bright future.
One smokejumper with a dark past.
One summer that will forever change them both.
They’re going . . .

Up In Flames.

Elle’s life couldn’t possibly get any more small town than it already is. She was raised in the same home as the two generations before her were, her family owns the iconic downtown cafe, and she’s been dating the pastor’s son since she was allowed to go on her first date at sixteen.

Cole’s life couldn’t possibly get any larger. He’s tried. Roaming from town to town for the past three summers as a smokejumper, Cole dreads the thought of putting down roots. The only thing he avoids more than that is settling down with one woman, especially when there are as many willing women as there are trees in the forest he jumps out of planes to save.

Elle Montgomery’s life is going one way. And Cole Carson’s is going the opposite. There’s no reason their paths should ever intersect, even in a small town in central Washington.

But summer in the Methow Valley has other plans for Elle and Cole. After an awkward run-in at the local swimming hole, Elle tries to keep away from the guy who looks at her like she’s already lying beneath him in bed. She fails. Cole is about as successful at staying away from the girl who seems immune to his charms.

As the summer heats up, and tensions between Elle and Cole run high, he begins to realize there’s more he’s attracted to than Elle’s body, and she discovers there’s a lot more to the man that jumps out of planes into raging forest fires than meets the eye.

UP IN FLAMES is a New Adult Romance intended for mature readers due to steamy content and saucy language.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

This book held a lot of relevance for me, and for that, I adored it from the very first page. As the girlfriend of a wild land fire fighter, the story was amazingly relatable (something all of us readers love!). I love the fact that Nicole Williams has chosen to write a novel with a smoke jumper in that. Not only have I never read a book that has one, it’s just pretty awesome that those hard working men are getting some attention too!

Ella Montgomery seemingly has it all. A steady, loyal, and attractive boyfriend. She has a wild-child best friend, a devoted dad, and a grandmother who tells it like it is. But, sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. And in the case of newly high school graduated Ella, she wants freedom. I absolutely loved Ella, I’m pretty sure this girl and I could be bff’s. She’s not so much naïve as just young, but daring. Seeing her come into her full potential, and seeing her realize that she does indeed have choices, is amazing. I’m all for a strong female character who isn’t an idiot and Ella is the perfect fit! Her mistakes are reasonable, ones I’ve made myself. And to top it all off, she’s a genuinely good person.

“We live our lives afraid of change and if we were to just embrace it instead, it wouldn’t seem like such a big deal when it hits us.”

I found myself wanting some more Grandma M in this book. It’s rare that one of my favorite side characters is the Grandma, but it this case, this lady totally rocked! All of her lines were the cold honest truth, something I adore! It’s exactly what all of us need to hear sometimes, and Grandma M certainly dishes it out like a champ!

“Like sex, seduction, and sin had decided to get it on and Cole Carson was the result.”

Oh hot smoke-jumpers everywhere. Cole Carson is one of my book-boyfriends, and a male character that I loved aside from his jaw-dropping good looks. He gets it. Cole Carson gets that nothing is forever, and that sometimes those chances you’re afraid to take, are totally worth it because in the end it’s your choice to make. You decide your fate, future, and all the fun stuff in between. Plus, it didn’t hurt that he saves Bambi’s and bunnies ;).

“I needed fire.”

Up In Flames is a remarkable story that I would (and will) read over and over again just too fully grasp all the meaning behind the words. Nicole Williams blew me out of the water with this one, and left me wanting more. Way more. First she gave us William, and then she gave us Patrick and Jude. Now, she’s given us a man who is a perfect combination of all those leading men we love. She gives us a story unlike others that will leave you desperate to re-visit their story over and over again. We get heat, love, desperation, and the meaning of life. Up In Flames is my new, must-read recommendation for the year!

“I was going…up in flames at just the thought of his touch.”

Someone To Love by Addison Moore

TITLE: Someone To Love

PUBLISHER: Self-Published
SERIES: --
SOURCE: Author

Genre: New Adult. Intended for mature audiences.

SOMEONE TO LOVE   A fun holiday read that's far more NAUGHTY than it ever is NICE.

What happens when two people who don’t believe in love happen to fall madly, deeply into the most beautiful relationship they could ever imagine? A train wreck.

Twenty-year old Kendall Jordan devises a seat of the pants plan to “play the player.”

When Kendall spots gorgeous Cruise Elton from across the room, something in her burns to have him. There’s only one problem; Cruise likes the ladies, a lot, and Kendall has never shared so much as a decent kiss with a guy.

Kendall has long since come to discover that love is an illusion that never lasts and Cruise couldn’t agree more. So when Kendall proposes that Cruise tutor her in becoming a female version of himself, Garrison Universities own manwhore, he’s more than happy to comply.

But when real feelings begin to emerge, and neither Kendall nor Cruise know how to classify them, everything they once thought they knew is redefined as they discover in one another, SOMEONE TO LOVE.

(synopsis taken from Author)

Any book by Addison Moore is a work of art. She’s totally proven herself over and over and now that she’s ventured into New Adult books with more spice, I’m now waay more in love (fan girl!)! Someone to Love is a book that teaches us all about the possibilities love holds, and how sometimes just because we’ve been exposed to crummy relationships doesn’t mean we won’t get our happily-ever-after. I loved how the story is unique, addressing an issue more and more young women and older alike face: parents or a parent who has had nothing but horrible relationships/marriages.

I am also a major fan-girl of bad boys. And while Cruise may not be the baddest thing around (okay, maybe he is ;) ), he’s also certainly not the boy next door. He’s charming, sexy, and funny. It’s wonderful to see this eclectic mix come into play. Even though he’s a player, I would totally fall for him too. So that’s why I can’t blame Kendall, aka Kenny, for being no match for him. Bad boys who aren’t all that bad are delicious!!

Kenny makes me giggle, and I love how she’s actually brave enough to ask a player (Cruise) to teach her his ways. And Cruise, loyal to the ever present hormones, is up for the challenge. This is an amazingly attractive and fun story. Addison Moore is a talented author who is consistently surprising me (all good I promise!). So hang onto your seats and run pick up Someone to Love RIGHT NOW. Yea, I used shouty caps. It’s worth it! The heat, the attraction, and the sexiness are bound to keep you warm on these cold winter days ;).

Author Bio:Addison Moore is the author of young adult fiction and romance. She has worked as therapist on a locked psychiatric unit for almost a decade. She is the mother of four wonderful children. She resides on the West Coast with her family and two dogs where she eats too much chocolate and stays up way too late. When she's not writing, she's reading.

FALLEN TOO FAR by Abbi Glines

TITLE: FALLEN TOO FAR
AUTHOR: Abbi Glines
RATING: 5 Amazing, Rushing, Beautiful Stars
PAGES: eBook
PUBLISHER: Self-Published by Author
SERIES:
SOURCE: Personal Library

To want what you’re not supposed to have…

She is only nineteen.

She is his new stepfather’s daughter.

She is still naïve and innocent due to spending the last three years taking care of her sick mother.

But for twenty-four year old Rush Finlay, she is the only thing that has ever been off limits. His famous father’s guilt money, his mother’s desperation to win his love, and his charm are the three reasons he has never been told no.

Blaire Wynn left her small farmhouse in Alabama, after her mother passed away, to move in with her father and his new wife in their sprawling beach house along the Florida gulf coast. She isn’t prepared for the lifestyle change and she knows she’ll never fit into this world. Then there is her sexy stepbrother who her father leaves her with for the summer while he runs off to Paris with his wife. Rush is as spoiled as he is gorgeous. He is also getting under her skin. She knows he is anything but good for her and that he’ll never be faithful to anyone. He is jaded and has secrets Blaire knows she may never uncover but even knowing all of that…

Blaire just may have fallen too far.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Oh holy hawtness. I think I may have FALLEN TOO FAR. In love with this book that is. Abbi Glines gives us something that is bound to shake you, heck I just finished it and I’m still in awe (and possibly crying). The level and depth of emotion is this book is nearly palpable, it’s so real. Glines takes New Adult and her writing to a whole new level. As a reader who has read and loved every single one of her novels, this is my new favorite.

Blaire is a nineteen year old girl who hasn’t had a cake-walk. In all honesty, as a nineteen year old myself, I admire the heck outta her. She takes strength to a new level. She’s so innocent, something pure yet she knows about the not so great things in life. How sometimes, things are taken from us for no reason. Rush, oh Rush. I have a new book boyfriend, whom I shall cherish forever. At first I’ll be honest, I thought he was a royal prick. Really, who can just be so cold to someone for no reason? But. When things start to change I quickly found myself falling in love with him, the cool way he handles thing, and who wouldn’t be drawn to the secrets behind those mysterious silver eyes?

“Inside I knew he was meant to be the guy that taught me about life.”

I’m also a big fan of Grant. I found myself wanting to tackle-hug him in the beginning. Knight in shining armor much? Okay, so good guys are refreshing! I also loved Jimmy, and Bethy, though at some points I wanted to slap some sense into her. As for Woods well, that remains to be seen. The characters are enchanting, they feel like friends even after the last page has been turned.

This book has it all. It explains in essence, what first love or puppy love is really like. One moment it’s there and then it’s not. We all have someone who maybe we crushed on hard-core in middle school, or that seemingly perfect homecoming date. I love how Glines described that perfectly with Blaire and Cain, it’s so realistic and true.

I loved every moment of this book. I smiled, got angry, cried, bawled, and loved with Blaire and the others. It’s a story that readers (17+ preferably) can really connect to. It brings another new winning title to the New Adult genre many of us are championing. I was hanging on to every line like it was chocolate (and it totally was, perhaps a bit better ;) ). There are many surprises in FALLEN TOO FAR that I didn’t expect, those twists and turns that every reader loves when they can’t predict them. In the end, I’m left breathless and knowing this:

“I had fallen too far.”

Always Me by Kelly Riad

TITLE: Always Me
AUTHOR: Kelly Riad
RATING: 4 Stars
PAGES: eBook
PUBLISHER: Independent
SERIES: Standalone
SOURCE: Author - Supa Girls Tour

By the summer, Tatiana “Nicky” Roman must learn to trust Xander Day if she’s ever going to discover the origin of her violent hallucinations. But centuries of being repeatedly murdered by him on July 17th are a little hard to forgive.

Over four hundred years ago, Xander thought the holy man’s prophetic words were as crazy as his eyes—that Alexander and Tatiana were destined to be together forever. But Xander misunderstood the mystic. He knows now forever meant forever taking the other’s life. If they never break the bloody curse holding them prisoners of fate, there will be only one outcome: death.

(synopsis taken from Goodreads)

Always Me draws us into a world unlike any other. We’re immediately introduced to most of the important characters in the novel, thank goodness! Nicky is a seventeen year old girl, born into a wealthy family with stern albeit loving parents. She attends a boarding school, Damascus Academy, and as perfect of a life as that might all seem, it’s not.

Nicky (or Tatiana if you prefer to use her first name) isn’t one of my favorite characters in the beginning. Honestly, I kind of wanted to smack her and tell her to knock it off. But! She does have redeeming qualities (whew!). She actually feels bad after being rude, so at least she acknowledges her ridiculous behavior. She actually grew on me towards the end of the book, her personality drastically changing due to a series of events and she grows up (yes folks, there is hope for her!)

Xander I fell in love with off the bat. So I have a thing for rude guys, they’re hot! Haha! Really he’s very mysterious, always an attractive attribute, and he genuinely cares for Nicky. He’s deadly honest and serious at points, and wise beyond his years. My favorite line of his is, “Destiny gets what Destiny wants.” He’s obviously not your typical high-school/boarding school senior.

The twists and turns in this book are semi-predictable, but delightful to follow anyways. The biggest downside in this book is that there’s not much humor (for a good reason of course) but at times it’s nice to take off a bit of the darkness, right? I also wasn’t expecting it to be involved with religion in anyway. I haven’t read many YA books lately that mention religion and beliefs and church-going activities like this one. I find it actually rather interesting, and refreshing.

I love Tatiana and Alexander. I love their story, their interactions, I love how they both learn and grow. And most of all, I love the journey they take to get there. Deception is so easy, lies so convincing, and love so enchanting when it’s been there all along, for many, many years. In the book Lord Byron is quoted, and because I absolutely love the poem, I’ve decided to share a bit to give everyone a taste for the ride of Always Me.

Jonathan McKnight lost everything in Afghanistan. His left hand, his identical twin, his self-respect and his naive belief that good always triumphs over evil. Burdened by grief and guilt, he searches for redemption on a solo backpacking trip into the remote Sawatch Mountains of Colorado and discovers a secret tribe of shifters.

River, the beautiful young shifter that rescues Jonathan has been promised to a man she despises. A man that does not desire her and only wants to use her to achieve his own political goals. Jonathan is more than a romantic rival. He’s a threat to those goals.

The only way to save Jonathan’s life is for River to take him as her recruit.

As Jonathan learns more about the horrors of River’s cult-like society, he becomes even more determined to escape it, until he learns that River is responsible for everything he does and will be executed if he succeeds.

Escape is not an option—unless Jonathan can persuade River to leave with him. And if she refuses? Well, then, he’ll just have to kidnap her.

River's Recruit (The Sanctuary Series)

I’ve only ever read a few shifter novels, and hardly anything to do with war, let alone anything to do with Afghanistan. I’ll be honest and say I tend to shy away from those things considering I’ve read too many horrible shifter novels, but Charlotte Abel shocked me! I loved the “world” that River’s Recruit is set in, loved the fact that it wasn’t overly gushy (because I’ll be honest, too much gooshy-ness tends to make me skim read at points) which was nice!

I went into this book open minded, and received a copy to review honestly. I’ll have to agree with most readers who’ve read this book. I adored River’s spunk. Any heroine or strong female lead with a feisty side who doesn’t wimp out totally impresses me. And the fact that I never once felt the need to shake River was a total plus!

Jonathan is an amazing character. He’s different, in a good way. He lost his twin, his left hand, and has what I’d deem a broken soul at the beginning. It’s so easy to just love him, to feel the need to draw him to you and comfort him. I think it’s incredible the changes we are witness to in his character specifically as Charlotte highlights his life for us.

The best part of the book was that it was written in a fresh way, it wasn’t filled with various paranormal beings and all. Charlotte presents us with a book that is easy to fall in love with, characters who pull at you, beg you to pay attention. I did see issues with the timing though, but, the overall experience I had while reading it was good! As a plus side, the way she presented the shifters and their dealings and ways, was far more believable and reliable than other titles (as many of us know, this is no easy task explaining the unknown!). I highly recommend reading River’s Recruit and I myself will certainly be looking forward to the titles to come in the series!

After reading a certain young adult paranormal romance series -- and throwing the final book against the wall in frustration -- I started imagining how I might have finished the series if I’d written it. That’s when I serendipitously discovered fan fiction.

My intention was to write a twenty-thousand word novella to find some closure with this series, but I ended up writing a 200,000 word saga. After it won a couple of awards, including “best original plot” and received over 2,000 reviews, I decided to get serious about writing my own original fiction. I studied every “how to write” book I could get my hands on, bought a laptop and converted the guest room into an office.

I started Shattered (now titled River’s Recruit) with nothing but a title and two characters, identical twins, Jonathan and Franklin McKnight. I didn’t have an outline much less a plot. All I had was these two teenage boys that were physically identical but complete opposites in every other way.

The story was originally Franklin’s, but as a protagonist, he was a little too goody-goody for me. After a couple of chapters, I found I didn’t like him very much…so I killed him.

I know, pretty harsh, but he serves the story much better dead than he ever did alive.  Jonathan was much more interesting, but he needed a love interest. I liked the name “River” so I created a character to go with the name.  Once I did that, the story really took off. River and Jonathan had entire conversations inside my head. I “saw” different action scenes unfolding like movies. I dreamed about this story and its characters. Soon, Eli, Gabrielle, Paul, Shula and Reuben joined the cast.

I’d written over 150,000 words, with no ending in sight, when I got accepted into a juried workshop with Orson Scott Card.  I hoped the workshop would help me figure out a satisfying ending. It didn’t.

I learned more about storytelling in that single week than I did studying on my own for two years.  Scott gave us twenty-four hours to write a short story. We had to start fresh and couldn’t use anything from any of our pre-workshop projects.  Not even the characters. It was grueling and nerve-wracking, especially when he had us critique each other’s pieces. He finished each round of critiques with his own brutally honest, but very helpful suggestions. I was sweating bullets by the time my turn rolled around. The story I wrote, “Name Games,” was about a young mage named Enchantment from the Ozark Mountains that falls in love with a super-sweet, non-magical boy, Josh…sound familiar?

“Name Games” was very well received by the other writers in the workshop, but I still cringed when my idol, Orson Scott Card, held up his copy of heavily red-inked pages, looked right at me, and said, “This needs to be expanded into a YA novel. Teenage girls are going to love this. They’ll even make their boyfriends read it.”

Needless to say, I put Shattered on hold to write Enchantment, promising River and Jonathan I’d continue their story when I finished. But when Enchantment became a Kindle bestseller, I decided to write its sequel, Taken, while the series was hot.

I had a few chapters of Finding Valor, the third and final book of The Channie Series, written when Jonathan and River started complaining. Loudly.

They assured me that I’d be able to whip out the first “Shattered” book in a few weeks since the entire series was already ninety percent done. Yeah, right. Never take a fictional character’s advice.

Shattered was not nearly as well written as I’d remembered. My writing had vastly improved after the workshop as well as during the course of writing Enchantment and Taken.

I ended up changing everything, including the plot and title. Jonathan and River matured while I was working on the other series. Jonathan even joined the army. I wrote an extensive outline (including the ending) and started over. It’s a much better story now, but it knocked my production schedule into next year. Only time will tell if putting Finding Valor on hold for six months to write River’s Recruit was the right choice. I think it was.

Channie and Josh vehemently disagree but they forgave me as soon as I started working on Finding Valor again. Of course, Jonathan and River aren’t very happy with me for putting their story on hold…again. Which only goes to prove: You can’t please everyone.
